The Aquitaine region, 5th in terms of visitor numbers, remains a popular destination due to the diversity of its tourist attractions.
While tourism is mainly concentrated on the coast, wine tourism attracts five million tourists every year. Bordeaux is at the top of the rankings for average expenditure by wine tourists with more than €60 spent per visit.
Seven years after being awarded UNESCO World Heritage status, Bordeaux, the largest urban area to be listed by UNESCO, attracts a growing number of tourists, including 35% foreign tourists (with British and Spanish visitors at the top of the figures chart).
Between 2000 and 2013, the number of overnight hotel stays doubled in Bordeaux, increasing from 2.5 million to nearly 5 million today.
