In Gironde, Sofiprotéol, the industrial and financial group in the oils and proteins sector, will have invested over 70 million Euros between 2008 and 2015.
SAIPOL, a subsidiary of Sofiprotéol, established in Bassens in the port area of Bordeaux, has invested 32 million Euros in a de-hulling unit and a biomass boiler.
The factory turns seeds into oils and oil cakes for human consumption, animal feed, energies and renewable chemistry.
Since 2008, 650,000 tons of sunflower seeds and rapeseeds are treated every year and transformed into refined oil, and packaged into bottles by Lesieur (its subsidiary), and into diester.
55% of crushed seeds are turned into oil cakes for animal feed. The hulls from the de-hulling process are burnt in the new biomass boiler and the vapour produced provides the necessary energy for the site. The ashes are enhanced into soil-enriching agents for farmland.
