In the field of laser technology, Muquans is one of the most promising start-up companies in the Bordeaux region.
In 2012, just one year after its creation, the company was awarded the “Photon d’or” (Golden Photon), a prestigious prize in this field. The business’s unique and patented technology is the result of research in two laboratories of the Paris Observatory and the Bordeaux Institut d’optique, and is based on the use of atoms trapped and cooled by lasers.
The new business has recently developed a gravimeter for geophysical measurements (volcanology, seismology, hydrology) and oil and mining exploration.
Technology using atoms cooled by laser is not new to laboratories, but thanks to a simplified, patented structure (one laser instead of ten), Muquans (10 people) uses this technology to build a compact and reliable instrument for measuring gravity.
“By 2015, we are aiming for a turnover of 5 million euros”, explained Bruno Desruelle, the CEO of Muquans.
