4,800 tons: that is the quantity of humanitarian freight sent to around sixty countries by MSF Logistique in 2015. It is also the theme of the photo exhibition organized for the 30-year anniversary of MSF Logistique, which does justice to the work carried out by the Médecins Sans Frontières teams in Bordeaux Mérignac.
A player in the booming business of humanitarian supply chain…..
It was in 1992 that Médecins Sans Frontières moved its humanitarian center to the Bordeaux agglomeration, its largest division in the world.
The success of a humanitarian emergency operation depends on a long preparation chain and it is in Bordeaux-Mérignac that this indispensable work starts.
The Bordeaux Mérignac site responded to the 4 criteria of MSF Logistique: proximity to an international airport, port and road links, support from local authorities, and expansion capacity.
More than 20,000 products allow MSF volunteers to intervene in humanitarian emergency situations: vehicles, humanitarian kits, water pumps, inflatable hospitals.
More than 150 people work full time at the Mérignac center, where the volume of activity amounts to 120 million euros, with a sharp rise in recent years due to the explosion of the humanitarian crisis.
“We are pretty much the barometers of the state of the world”, explains the Managing Director of MSF Logistique, Erland Egiziano.
…which needs new storage capacities on the Bordeaux site
Faced with the increase in the number of global interventions, MSF Logistique is quickly finding itself constricted on its Mérignac premises. In 2015, an initial extension allowed expansion from 5,000 to more than 12,000 m².
Since the Mérignac site is already saturated, an extra warehouse of 3,000 square meters at Blanquefort and new premises at Mérignac Airport are currently in construction.
To celebrate 30 years of MSF Logistique, 22 large-format photos are on display in the Jardin Public in Bordeaux from 9th May to 9th July 2016. This photo exhibition tracks the main interventions by Médecins sans Frontières throughout the year 2015.
