The Merck Biodevelopment site in Martillac, which belongs to the Life Sciences division of German group Merck, is specialised in new manufacturing procedures for biotechnology-based pharmaceuticals.
Didier Peyret, Managing Director, briefed Invest in Bordeaux on the development of the Martillac site, and highlighted its vibrancy over the last three years.
This unit, which was created in Martillac in 1989 and acquired by Merck in 2007, has benefited from new investments.
Could you tell us about these new activities (an extension, a new logistics unit, etc.)?
Over the last three years, large areas of office space have been converted into laboratories, in order to meet increased customer demands.
An extension was built to our purification premises and an additional cell culture line was installed in the area freed up by our new warehouse.
The line, with a unit capacity of 2000 litres, doubled the existing capacity and corresponds to industrial-scale production for certain products.
Our logistics area of 1,500m2 operates at full capacity and we are considering a possible extension.
We have several projects to further develop our activity. Probably more projects than we can accomplish, which is a ‘very good problem’ to have, a sign of good health.
How many jobs have been created on site as a result of these investments since 2015?
We have signed more than 130 permanent contracts since the beginning of 2015. If we add all the contracts together, more than 330 people work for Merck Biodevelopment at the Martillac site.
There is a wide variety of occupations, which cover most of the company’s operations, from development to monitoring, quality control, maintenance and EHS. Around 40% of profiles are highly qualified, such as experts, engineers or project heads. Internal mobility also works very well.
You received support from Invest in Bordeaux to open in Martillac. What role has the agency played in your successive developments?
Our collaboration with Invest in Bordeaux goes back to the early 2000s, when we made contact with local, regional and national stakeholders, and we have had great success since then.
I particularly appreciate the pro-active support and the clear commitment to providing tailor-made assistance. Our needs fluctuate according to our projects, and Invest in Bordeaux has always been at our side.
