Hermès has chosen the location for its 4th production site: Bordeaux Metropole in Nouvelle Aquitaine. The future leather goods production site will be located in the town of St Vincent de Paul and will employ 250 artisans.
The site is scheduled to open by 2020 after an introductory and training phase in artisan craftsmanship at a provisional workshop in Ambarès, near Bordeaux.
A project with a strong cultural and human resource focus
The delivery of new buildings boasting high-quality architectural and environmental design is set for 2020. The leather goods production site will eventually employ 250 artisans.
The production site in St Vincent de Paul will manufacture handbags in a wide assortment of models and types of leather.
Like all the group’s sites, the craft of saddlery and leather goods will be at the heart of the production process, which requires artisans to undergo a long training period.
The project aims to integrate a first group of approximately 20 artisans-in-training in September 2018 at the provisional workshop in Ambarès, a town bordering Saint Vincent de Paul.
The recruitment will proceed at a pace of two groups of approximately 25 artisans per year.
To become a saddlery and leather worker, future artisans must attend an initial training program either through the Ecole du Cuir (Leather School), present at all leather goods production sites and centers, or through a vocational school that partners with Hermès. These partnerships have been established for all the group’s production sites in France to ensure the certified training of new employees.
Hermès offers training with a mentoring approach, in which current artisans pass on their in-depth knowledge and specific Hermès expertise. Some artisans are sent from the production site on secondment to teach in the context of the partnerships with vocational schools.
The company is accepting applications from all types of profiles, ages, and education levels.
On average, the initial training lasts 18 months.
Bordeaux, an attractive destination for future teams
Located in the Entre-deux-Mers region along the banks of the Dordogne, the town of St Vincent de Paul offers significant advantages, making it an attractive destination for future local teams and teams on secondment from other Hermès production sites.
Following extensive consultation with artisans and the group’s management teams, the search for a new site location began to shift towards western France, eventually focusing on Bordeaux.
The Bordeaux urban area offers many advantages for Hermès in terms of quality of life, economic development and accessibility.
The decision to establish the site in Saint Vincent de Paul quickly won approval, since it offers the local area the possibility of enhancing its environment and contributing to the balanced development of housing and local employment.
This undertaking is in line with the company’s goal of sustainable and controlled development.
