With the Laser Megajoule project, a three billion euro investment, the Aquitaine region has brought together companies and researchers in order to develop the optics and laser industry and attract new talent.
This facility, which will be one of the two most powerful lasers in the world, will simulate thermonuclear explosions on a reduced scale, and should be operational by the end of 2014.
The new Aquitaine Optics Institute which opened at the end of October is unique in France and combines research, technology transfer and training activities, thereby completing the scheme set up by the competitiveness cluster “Route des lasers”: Laseris and Cité de la Photonique technology parks, Alphanov, a technology centre for academic laboratories and businesses and PYLA, a training platform.
Today, this ecosystem, which brings together innovating SMEs equipped with high-end technology such as Amplitude Systèmes and big businesses (Thalès, Airbus…), is a true asset which will increase the attractiveness of the industry.
