Herakles, a subsidiary of SAFRAN, has just opened a new biological treatment unit on the site of St Médard en Jalles/Bordeaux.
Propellant will be produced on the site, a high energy material with numerous applications: in Ariane 5 and Vega rocket engines, for strategic and tactical missile propulsion, airbag inflation, etc.
Christened LICORNE™ (Industrial line collection of pyrotechnic articles and natural reduction of effluents), this new installation which is an environmental pioneer provides a tailored solution for the treatment of ammonium perchlorate, a major constituent of propellant, used for propelling launchers and missiles.
The unit which will need an investment of €30 million, of which €20 million will be provided by the DGA, will handle M45 missiles reaching the end of their lifespan and being gradually replaced by the M51, and also waste associated with the production site in Bordeaux.
